the land stretching before us, a vast open wound
scabbed with coughing smokestacks and shipping yards.
we race highway to highway
through sordid towns with heavy names, sticky on my tongue.
I am searching for the Garden in the Garden State
somewhere in the haze and heat waves
but the Turnpike paved Eden down, dismembered
stitched it up sloppily with power lines and overpasses
hissing loveless lullabies to Eve’s children,
still weeping.
